Ride report by Simeon Orme
I manage to break spoke in the back wheel of my Trek FX3 bike on the Good Friday day Friday ride to
Lindale. So I was on my Gravel bike for today’s ride Barbon Manor Wood.
This sugar free diet that I am on, improve my general fittest and making the climb out of Halton up Kirkby
Lonsdale Road a lot easier to do, the first mile out of Halton along Kirkby Lonsdale road mainly climbing
up until get to junction with Park Lane where you probably at highest point of the ride to Kirkby Lonsdale
at around 140 metres above sea level. Yes you get some nice views on both sides of the road, has followed
Kirkby Lonsdale Road down to Red Well where stop for coffee and sausage bun at the Saddles Cafe.
After my refueling stop, there was small climb to do on the B6254, then its fairly easy to Kirkby Lonsdale
mostly down hill, its one of those routes if you live in North Lancashire, you get use to doing, as Kirkby
Lonsdale is one of the gateways in the Yorkshire Dales National Park and for some reason honeypot for
tourists in motor vehicles who I think they can’t read a map or they have work out like most local cyclist’s
have that there network of quiet lanes on both sides of the Lune Valley to explore.
After crossing over the River Lune via Devil’s Bridge, then cross over A683, then push my bike through a
car park and then up steep lane before getting back on it to pedal along Chapelhouse Lane into High
Casterton which is one of those places that you need very large bank balance to live in and only about mile
from noise of Devil’s Bridge.
After a bit of climb up Gateheads Brow, I turn on to Wandales Lane which is old Roman Road, you do get
a few views of the old railway line which ran from Clapham and then up the Lune Valley to Lowgill, its
shouting out to be turn into cycle path which may encourage more folk to use pedal power instead of motor
power.
Wandales Lane soon turn into Bents Lane for the climb into Barbondale, once I did most of the climbing
near the end of the lane, I stop at bench with fine view of the Lune Valley, to enjoy my pack lunch.
After my lunch break, I headed up Barbondale Road to just pass Blindbeck Bridge, then crossover Barbon
Beck to join the bridleway through Barbon Manor Wood, its enjoyable bridleway to do on gravel bike, has
you can see from the photos that took of the track, I was little to early for the show that the Bluebells put on
at this time of year.
I soon back on tarmac again, I headed to The Churchmouse at Barbon for brew before following A683
through Casterton down to Devil’s Bridge and then retracing my morning route back to Halton.
