Ride report by Simeon Orme I got a e-mail from John asking was I going out on ride on the Saturday, I had look at weather forecast for the next day, it did not look to bad for the day so my answer was yes that I was having to ride towards Grange-Over- Sands that we should meet up at the Leighton Moss Cafe. He fail to mention in his e-mail that he was doing a Iron Man event in five weeks time, that he was coming out on road bike with 28 mm tyres on and not bring a pack lunch. Which I found out about when arrive at the cafe, a little a bit late due lose strap on my camera bag which later work out to fix with aid of the internet, so I was down to using my Pentax K -3 mark three body with 18 to 270 mm lens on it, to take photos of day ride. Also I was on the Gravel bike with 38 mm tyres on it, has wanted to do the bridleway from Grange-Over-Sands to Hampsfield but these plans when out of the window when we had pre ride conversation over coffee and sausage bun. It was wet start to the ride and for next few hours, has we follow Red Bridge Lane which soon became Ford Lane, then there was a bit climbing do in Waterslack, has headed pass Challan Hall, we were soon turning on to Coldwell Lane and then following Storth Road into Storth and then Sandside. From Sandside there was section on Park Road, before we following the Marsh Road across Milnthorpe Marsh to the A6 where we did section of the A6 around Levens Hall, then pedal along Sampool Lane to High Sampool where we follow the tarmac bridleway to Sampool bridge. After crossing over the A590, we headed out of Sampool Bridge following the cycle path along side the A590 and then old A590 road to Longhowe End where cross back under the A590 using the underpass. It was still raining, has we follow the lane across Meathop Moss to Meathop. We headed out of Meathop following Meathop Road and then Lindale Road where we stop for lunch at Butterfingers Cafe on the Main Street where there another round of Sausage bun and coffee for me. After our refueling stop, we headed of Grange-Over-Sands on Windermere Road which was a bit of test on climbing skills which both pass with flying colours, has we both headed into Lindale. We soon headed out headed out of Lindale along the Back O’ Th’ Fell Road up the Winster Valley, after few miles of pedaling this turn into the Tarn Green Road. After passing Hodge Hill Hall we stop to look at map near Cowmire Hall to workout which was best route to use, to get to Lyth Valley. After looking at the map, we decided to follow Woodside Road and then the lane through High Birks to the A5074. Day was getting warmer has we headed into Crosthwaite and followed the lane around to Underbarrow. In Underbarrow, we headed out of village along Grigg Hall Lane, then followed the lanes down the Lyth Valley to Brigsteer where there bit more climbing to do from Low Lane to Parkend Lane, we were soon following the tarmac through woods of Brigsteer Park and down into Levens where we headed to Levens Kitchen at Levens Hall for another refueling stop. It was like following dots on map has we headed back into North Lancashire which I am not going bore you with details, if interest enough download gpx file. We sort of said our goodbyes in Cinderbarrow when I got off to push the bike up that sharp small steep climb into the hamlet and John plough on heading for home. Yes I was quite proud of myself in managing keep up with John but gave me change to potter home and if you keep eyes open you see botanical oddities like the Coralroot Bittercress flowering at side of Borwick Lane which text books only grows in the Southern England. My pack lunch came my tea which enjoy on bench on the village green in Borwick, then did section of the towpath of the Lancaster Canal between Borwick and Caperwray before following the lanes back to Halton.
