Tulips in Arkholme
Ride report by Simeon Orme The forecast for today ride was for being damp but it was reasonably dry start has I headed out of Halton along Kirkby Lonsdale Road. The draw of that sausage bun and coffee at Saddles Cafe at Red Well County Inn, a few miles later made for enjoyable stop, my wisdom in going on ride was call into question but in fact only had to put all the Waterproofs on in Dent. After the refueling stop, I continue up the Lune Valley following the B6254 and about fifty minutes later I was crossing over A65 and following Bridge Brow down to Devil’s Bridge, even on wet day there were still quite few folk hanging around the bridge. I surprise my self, by pedaling up that steep climb out of the car park on the other side A683, I soon following Chapel House Lane into High Casterton and then on into Casterton where the short section on A683 before following the lanes into Barbon. Headed out of Barbon along the High Road which I followed for the next few miles before rejoining the A683 at Middleton Hall Bridge, again it was was another short section on A683, I soon heading along Jordan Lane. There was a bit climbing to do before following the lane down to Holme Open Farm where the campsite was full with folk enjoying the Bank Holiday weekend weather. From Holme Open Farm, there was a bit of climbing to do get up Holme Fell where I was planing to stop for lunch but the bench that usually stop at was full with walkers siting on it, so continue on the tarmac and followed the lane down into Dentdale. I decided at Rash Bridge to cross over the River Dee and follow the main road up the dale, which did for next few miles before turning on to Hall Lane which is botanical delight at this time year, the lane soon into Hall Road. After crossing back over River Dee via Church Bridge, I followed Beech Hill into Dent where stop for lunch in the shelter next to public toilets. After my lunch stop, I thought it would good ideal to put on the waterproofs before following the tarmac out of Dent down the valley to Gawthrop for the push up Stone Rigg Outrake and yes not fit enough to ride up it yet! Its one of those climbs that usually rewards with long freewheel but on today’s the wind was blowing up Barbondale Road. So there was a bit of head wind, has I headed down Barbondale. At end of the dale, I followed Bents Lane and then Greenber Lane down to A683 which I followed through Casterton, then down to Devil’s Bridge which I use to crossed back over River Lune, then followed my morrow route back down the Lune Valley to Halton with short stop in Arkholme for afternoon eat up.
