A late afternoon view looking towards the coast taken from Scargill Road
Ride report by Simeon Orme The aim for this ride was get up into the Winster Valley and enjoy rare bank holiday off with good weather. So the day started with the climb out of Halton up Arrow Lane and then along Scargill Road, this climb seem to got a lot easier to do has head into the fourth month of the year and that the thing about cycling the more you do easier it gets! Once you climb out of the Lune Valley its fairly easy ride down to the coast, my route took me through Neither Kellet, then followed the Back Lane down into Carnforth. I headed out of Carnforth along Crag Bank Lane to the foot / cycle bridge near Hagg Wood where cross over the River Keer and then followed the public byway up to the New Road which followed through Crag Foot and across Leighton Moss for first refueling stop at the Leighton Moss Cafe at the RSPB Visitor Centre. After my brew stop, I had look around the wildlife garden outside the visitor centre, you could see that Spring was here with the Cowslips flowering in the garden. After my photo taking, I was soon back pedaling the bike along Red Bridge Lane which soon turns into Ford Lane, there a bit of small climb has you head towards Challan Hall but I was rewarded with some fine views of Gait Barrows National Nature Reserve, after good mile of pedaling I turn on to Cold Well Lane where cross over the border from Lancashire into Cumbria. I soon turn on Storth Road which followed into Storth and then on into Sandside where stop to taken that photo of the Coltsfoot flowering at side of the lane. After the photo stop, there was good mile pedaling along the busy Park Road which one main routes that motorist use get to Arnside. After crossing over the River Bela via Milnthorpe Bridge, I soon following Marsh Road across Milnthorpe Marsh which was busy with cyclists enjoying the good weather. After enjoying ride across Milnthorpe Marsh, it was on that section of the A6 which you have follow get around Levens Hall. After about ten minutes pedaling, I left the A6 behind and headed along Sampool Lane to High Sampool where followed the tarmac bridleway to Sampool Bridge where spend a few minutes judging when is best time to cross over the A590. I headed out of Sampool Bridge, following the cycle path along side the A590, then followed the lane to Raven’s Lodge Farm where turn on to bridleway to Mill Side. The first part of the bridleway is a bit of steep climb which push my bike up but rest of the bridleway was fairly easy to ride along. I stop for lunch on bench in Mill Side. After my lunch break, I followed lane out of Mill Side and across the Rocky Common, then followed tarmac up to Witherslack Hall, there some good views of Whitbarrow Scar from the lane. After climb up to the hall, its fairly easy ride following the lane through Low Park Wood. After passing North Lodge, I followed the lane down into the Winster Valley, passing through High Low Wood Farm, then Middle Low Wood Farm and then Low Low Wood Farm. Crossing over the River Winster via Bleacrag Bridge, then I headed along Holme Road before following the Back o’ th’ Fell Road into Lindale. I did not stay long in Lindale before heading along B5277 towards the A590 for next mile before following lane back across the Winster Valley to Meathop. From Meathop, I the followed the lane across Meathop Moss to Longhowe End and using the under pass to cross under A590. From Longhowe End it was case following the old A590 (Yes I am old enough to have memories of cycling along this road when I was teenager when it was busy ‘A’ road) and then cycle path along side the A590 back to Sampool Bridge. From Sampool Bridge, I followed the Old Road into Levens, then the climb up Lowgate into main part village before heading out of Levens along Levens Lane. I had another refueling stop at the Leven Kitchen at Levens Hall which does have cycle park. The Levens Kitchen is open sevens days a week from 10am to 4pm (5pm when the house and garden are open). It nice see Fritillaria meleagris flowering in the grounds of the hall its one those English native flowers you should grow in your garden. So after my cafe stop, there was another section on the A6 before headed through the twin villages of Leasgill and Heversham. I headed out of Heversham along Woodhouse Lane and then followed the lanes around to Ackenthwaite where cross over the B6385 and then follow the B6384 through the hamlet of Whasset and then followed the Old Lane into Holme. From Holme, it was case of following the lanes through Holme Mills and Hilderstone to Cinderbarrow. I headed out of Cinderbarrow, along Cinderbarrow Lane to the A6070 which did short section on before turn on to Whitebeck Lane where stop at the small Whitebeck Nature Reserve to take some photos of cherry blossom on the trees in the reserve which are going to be feature of this nature reserve in the years to come. I followed Whitebeck Lane into Priest Hutton and then followed Borwick Lane into Borwick where stop at bench on village green for eat up before the climb back into the Lune Valley.
