Ride report by Simeon Orme
The cycling gods were with me on this ride, I headed out of Halton along Foundry Lane which soon turn into
Bottomdale Road for the climb out of the Lune Valley. I am getting use to doing this climb on bike, has my
car develop a fault on rear passenger wheel which jam up wheel and I had call out Green Flag which did
temporary fix on it where I could drive forward which got back to Halton where handed the keys and car
over to local garage to get fix, it turn out to be something to do with rear break shoes jamming up due to
large amount of rain we had over March. So out come of this, I am to do the daily commute to work on bike
instead in the car.
After climb up Bottomdale Road to Four Lanes End, I soon following Ancliffe Lane into Bolton-le-Sand
where turn on to the towpath of the Lancaster Canal which followed to Crag Bank where I cross over the A6
and then followed Crag Bank Road through Crag Bank.
Then head out of Crag Bank along Crag Bank Lane, after about good mile, I cross over River Keer via the
cycle / foot bridge, then followed the public byway up to the New Road which I followed through Crag Foot
and across Leighton Moss.
I stop for coffee and fruity flapjack at the Leighton Moss Cafe at the RSPB Visitor Centre.
After the coffee break, I play around with the cameras in the Visitor Centre Wildlife Garden and for micro
photographer like me, there a lot young shoots starting to appear which made some interesting photos.
I was soon on my way again heading up along The Row, with brief stop at Bank Well where stop a photo of
the reeds.
I was soon heading along Park Road towards Elmslack, where headed up the Cove Road towards Arnside
Knott, after about good mile, I turn off the tarmac to follow the bridleway over the shoulder of Arnside
Knott, which delightful bridleway to follow but it highlights how screw up the right roam is in England
where you have private woodland on one side of the bridleway and National Trust land on other side of the
track where have the right to walk where you want!
At the summit of the bridleway, I stop at a bench with good view of the Kent Estuary to enjoy my pack
lunch.
After my lunch break, I followed Saul’s Drive and then Kott Lane down into Arnside where stop to take a
few photos at end of the pier.
Then headed out of Arnside along Station Road and Black Dyke Road.
After following the tarmac across Silverdale Moss and across the County border into Lancashire, the lane
changes its name to Cold Well Lane, I was soon turning on to Brackenthwaite Lane which I followed for
about mile before following the lane across Hale Moss, after short section on A6, I turn on to Moss Lane
which followed across Burton Moss, then turn on to Hilderstone Lane which followed into Cinderbarrow.
I headed out Cinderbarrow along Cinderbarrow Lane which followed to the A6070 which I did short section
on before heading along Whitebeck Lane into Priest Hutton and then following Borwick Lane into Borwick
where stop to take some photos have some to eat.
Instead of going the Kellet Lane way back to Over Kellet, I decide to head up the Keer Valley along Borwick
Road and then follow Capernwray Road into Over Kellet.
I headed out of Over Kellet on Neither Kellet Road, then after about good mile turn on to Long Dales Lane
before following Scargill Road into Halton.
