Ride report by Simeon Orme Yes I was a bit late setting off, it was something do with not getting up early for work but was I got my act together, I followed the lanes out of Halton with short photo stop on Long Dales Lane to take a photo of flower, when you stop for about ten minutes messing around to setup the camera on tripod to get perfect close up photo in flower, you start notice things like that quite lane, is not very quite and there were over six cars pass me on Sunday morning. You sometimes wonder why folk make car journeys at weekends, if they took a few minutes to think about it and ask them self a simple question, can I make this journey on foot or my bike. I think the number of car trips made at weekends would go down and saving them self some money by not using the car. Once, I took the first photo of the day, I turn on to Nether Kellet Road and headed towards Over Kellet. After passing through Over Kellet, there was a short section on Capernwray Road before heading along Kellet Lane for next few miles. After recrossing the Lancaster Canal near Tewitfield, I turn on to Kirkgate Lane which is a public byway and at this time of the year there are a lot of Spring flowers in the hedgerows at side of the lane, so spent some time taking photos of what was in flower before carrying on with my cycle ride. I was soon back on tarmac again, with short section on Whitebeck Lane before heading up A6070 to Burton- in-Kendal, its village with some very large houses when you look closely, when cycle along main road through the village. Once I had pass the village hall, I turn on to Vicarage Lane and after little bit of climbing, I then turn on to Slape Lane, the next track of the day, its one of those tracks best done by your self, has few sections of the track you need to get off the bike and push it along due to damage surface of the bridleway, Has you follow it towards Pickles Wood where there bench at the entry to the Hutton Roof Crags Nature Reserve, which make useful stopping point for lunch. In age when we encourage not use the car, I think the UK nature charities do need rethink their policy with regards to visitors to their nature reserves on bikes and start providing cycle parking areas where a bike can be lock up and be still there when you come back to it and it may encourage more visitors to cycle there instead of using the motor car. I would have love to have had walk around this nature reserve but there were no safe places where I felt that I could leave a bike lock up for a hour and be still there when I came back and if I was with another cyclist with two or three cycle locks and lock the bikes together, I would gone for walk around the reserve. Unfortunately for me, its area that going have to explore on two feet instead of two wheels, after looking at the map there is small car park at Plain Quarry on Dalton Crags which may be good starting point for walk around Hutton Roof Crags area. After my lunch stop, I continue to follow the bridleway through Pickles Wood which I would say was a bit of disappointment, Has I had push it along the bridleway, you may stand better change of riding along it on mountain bike, once the bridleway headed out of the nature reserve the surface of the bridleway improve. I still need ride a few more miles before trying to ride up the lane up Clawthorpe Fell, I could stop a few times to take photos of flora at side of lane but only stop once to take closeup photo of the cherry blossom. At top of the climb there were several motor cars park at both sides of lane and good reason to provide more safe cycle parking, so local folk leave their cars at home or those who have travel some distance closer to junction 36 of the M6 where Auction Market car park is empty at weekends. The bridleway across Holmepark Fell is always interesting to do, there only one small section I got off bike and walk, I was little to early in the reason to see the Early Purple Orchids which flower along this bridleway in large numbers but it was make up for with some views looking to the coast. After passing through Holme Park Farm, there was short section on the A6070, before turning on to North Road which followed short distance towards Holme before turning on to the towpath of the Lancaster Canal, which had no problems riding along from Holme to Cinderbarrow Lane. Then there was short section on Cinderbarrow Lane which I had to use cross over the M6 before continuing on the towpath which I followed down to Tewitfield where turn back on to Kellet Lane and head back to Halton.
