Ride report by Simeon Orme For me, its just under hour ride to get the RSPB Visitor Centre at Leighton Moss and please note that the cafe at the visitor centre as change its name to The Roost Cafe which noticed a few week ago which I think was waste of time, has most locals and social media are still calling it the Leighton Moss Cafe. One main reasons for starting rides from there cyclist’s get 10% discount in the cafe. It was just me on the ride, so after finished my coffee and cake in the cafe, I headed into the wildlife garden to take some photos of what was flowering in the garden and for those you who camera nerds, I was using Tampon AF 90mm F2.8 micro lens with my Pentax K-3 mark 3 body which decide to leave on the camera for rest of day instead of swapping back over to Pentax 18 to 270 mm which use as standard lens with the Pentax K-3 body on rides. I was quite happy with results using Tampon 90 mm lens with the Pentax K-3 body, I think the lens as earn permanent place in my Lowepro Slingshot Edge 250 AW camera bag which I use when I am out cycling. I tend to take most my micro photos now using a Pentax K-1 mark 2 body with 150mm Irix Macro 1:1 lens and for tripod free shots, I try to keep the focus at around F20 at ISO 1600 in AV mode which fine I get some good results with, then tidy up the image using Topaz Labs De Noise Al plugin with Affinity Photo 2 Editor. There is a bit of learning curve to using Affinity Photo 2 Editor but there plenty YouTube Videos to look at but its worth £49.99 they charging you with no subscription that with 25% discount on 11th July 2023. Anyway after looking around the wildlife garden which is well worth doing, I was back on the bike pedaling it along Red Bridge Lane which soon turn into Ford Lane, then good mile of pedaling through this delightful national park which a lot folk forget that Arnside and Silverdale Area Outstanding Natural Beauty is National Park before turning on to Cold Well Lane. After crossing over the County border into Cumbria, I was soon following Storth Road through Hazelslack and then on through Storth, then its Sister village of Sandside. Then there was short section on Park Road of about half mile before following the Marsh Road across Milnthorpe Marsh to the A6. Then there that section on the A6 around Levens Hall which does get busy with motor traffic but it take about 10 minutes of pedaling to get around before headed along Sampool Lane to High Sampool where turn on to tarmac bridleway which followed to Sampool Bridge. After crossing over A590 which may take a few minutes to do due to speed that motorist drive along this ‘A’ road. I headed out of Sampool Bridge along the Old Road and then the Brigsteer Causeway, you know how fit you are if manage to do climb into Brigsteer. I head out Brigsteer along Low Lane which followed up the Lyth Valley to Underbarrow. I head out along Underbarrow along Jinny Hill which soon into Mountjoy Brow, it was up and down route up the valley to Crook. After short section on the B5284, I turn on to the Crook Road which followed into Staveley and was quite please with myself for getting there for around 1 pm. After my lunch stop in Staveley, I followed the lanes down the east side of the Kent Valley, crossing over A6 in Skelmergh, then following Helme Lane the Mealbank Road into Mealbank where got off the bike and push up the climb to A685. After short section on A685, I turn on to Paddy Lane and after good mile of climbing there name change once I cross over the A684 to Hayclose Lane, which I followed to the B6254. After crossing over B6254, I followed the lane across The Helm to the A65 which I did short section on it before turning off it at Barrows Green. I then followed the lanes through Crosscrake and then on to Stainton. On the section lane from Stainton Bridge End to Lane Farm, I have come to conclusion if own big 4 by 4 and don’t work in the land industries you must be dumb because three of the four motorist did know how drive down a narrow lane, most folk who own four by fours don’t need them and in age climate change should we all trying to get about on two wheels or on our two feet especially at weekends. After crossing over the B6385, I made it to Farleton View Tearooms before closing time at 3.30pm. After the coffee and cake stop, I nearly made home dry but had take shelter and put on my water proofs in Bus Shelter on the village in Over Kellet, then wait for about ten minutes for the thunderstorm to pass before continue ride back to Halton.
