Ride report by Simeon Orme It was one of those days where you hope weather presenter at the BBC as got the weather forecast wrong and its going to be brilliant day with bright blue skies but omens when I got to the Crook O’Lune were not brilliant as it was over cast with low clouds when you look up the Lune Valley. It may have wise to turn around at this point to around and headed home to spend the day in front of a warm fire reading a book but I did not and carry on up cycle path to Bull Beck where join the A683 which I followed for next few miles up the Lune Valley before joining the B 6480 which followed towards Wray, I soon passed by group of cyclists from Lune Racing Cycling Club who start their Sunday rides from Dalton Square in Lancaster on Sunday and few hours later on Mewith Lane they pass me again in the opposite direction heading back to Lancaster, I don’t where they had been but during this time I had stop for coffee and cake at the Bridge House Farm Tearoom in Wray. Then after my brew stop, I had headed up the Hindburn Valley to Mill Houses where it started to rain, from Mill Houses I continue along Russells Lane, then along the Old Moor Lane before heading up Cross Road where I turn on to Mewith Lane which stay on for next several miles. On good day on Mewith Lane there brilliant views of the Yorkshire Dales National Park on one side of the lane, on the other side of the lane there good views of the Forest of Bowland AONB but on today ride were not brilliant. Any way I stay on the lane for next few miles and after climb up through Keasden to Dubgarth Hill, I headed down into Wenningdale, after crossing over River Wenning at Clapham Station, I decide to have my lunch in the shelter on the platform of the station. After my lunch break, I had decided it was not worth heading into Clapham which I had plan to do, so I followed the lane up to Crook Beck Bridge on the B 6480 and then followed the B 6480 back down Wenningdale. The thing about Winter cycling you see things that you don’t see at other times of the year, this was case on this ride on the length of B 6480 from Low Bentham to Wennington in places its only several metres from banks of River Wenning which is part of River Lune catchment area, depending on amount rain falling on the local mountains, the river levels go up and down by several metres over calendar month in Winter so why would you buy new house only 50 to 100 metres away from River Wenning in Low Bentham. My mind wonders sometimes after storms of December 2015 flood plains are last place you should be building new houses on. Any way the ride Wenningdale is always scenic, after passing through Wennington, Tatham and then Wray. I turn off the B 6480 at Butt Yeats and headed into Hornby for a brew at Hornby Post Office Tearoom which looks like it as change hands after being up for sale for past year. After my refuelling stop at the Tearoom, the sun had decided to shine, so I did short section on A683 through Hornby, then cross over the River Lune via the Loyn Bridge before heading up Fleet Lane past Fleet Farm with detour down Sandbeds Lane to look at view at end of lane looking down the Lune Valley before heading back up it again, to follow Lea Lane through Eskrigge up to Aughton Road which through Aughton to the Kirkby Lonsdale Road which followed back home to Halton. It had been very damp ride but well worth getting out of house for.
