Ride report by Simeon Orme
It was second long ride out on my new touring bike and its a faster bike to ride, as I notice getting to morning
cafe stop, a good fifteen minutes earlier than I would have done on my Trek Hybrid.
I also think its going wider the area I can cover on good day’s ride to between 60 to 70 miles over the next few
months, so if you thinking about coming out with me come out on touring bike and not Mountain Bike.
As usual there was just me on the ride, I climb out of Halton up to Four Lane Ends, then short distance on
Bottomdale Road before following Ancliffe Lane into Bolton-le-Sands where join the towpath of the Lancaster
Canal which followed for next mile towards Carnforth. At Crag Bank, I crossed over the A6 and followed the
tarmac through Crag Bank around to Hagg Wood where I crossed over River Keer via the cycle/ foot bridge,
then there was few more miles of road work as I headed towards Silverdale, stopping at cafe at the RSPB
Visitor Centre at Leighton Moss. Do tell the staff in the cafe that you cycle there as you 10 percent discount off
your food.
I was soon back on my bike, following the lanes through Waterslack, Hazelslack, Storth and Sandside where I
join the B5282 for short section before turning off it, after crossing over River Bela via Milnthorpe Bridge. The
next few miles, I headed across Milnthorpe Marsh on Marsh Road soon joining the A6 which I followed around
Levens Hall where I stop to chat with Cliff who was old RSF member who came out on South Lakes group
rides when he was living at Warton, he now living in Kendal. After several minutes of chatting we when our
separate ways, Cliff off for a brew at the Bellingham Buttery at Leven Hall which I try out later on in the day
and continue on my ride following the now tarmac bridleway to Sampool Bridge. From Sampool Bridge I
followed the short cycle path along side the A590 on to the Old A590 which is quite lane that followed up to
Derby Arms near Witherslack where I cross under the A590 using the underpass. Then it was some more lane
work as followed lanes through Meathop into Grange-over-Sands. In Grange-over-Sands I soon left busy part of
the town to follow the public byway up pass Nutwood Manor, stop for lunch on bench with good view at top of
the climb out of Grange-over-Sands.
After my lunch stop, I followed the public byway towards Hampsfield and the bridleway over to High
Hampsfield Farm, then it was bit more road work as I head through Low and High Newton. In High Newton
there was a bit of climbing to do as I head up Height Road before following the public byway to Simpson
Ground and then across Simpson Ground Allotment and around to Sow How Lane.
From Sow How Lane, there was few miles of lane work, with some good views Winster Valley down in valley
bottom, as follow lanes up and down around to Birkett House Allotment where join the next track of the day,
which start off as tarmac surface but soon turn into hardcore surface which followed toward High House Farm,
after good mile of riding the track turns into bridleway offering a choice of routes to the A5074, I took the
shorter and higher route to the tarmac. Once I got to the tarmac its was around 3pm, as I wanted another cafe
stop on the ride I decide to do some more road work down the A5074 into Lyth Valley then followed the lanes
through Crosthwaite, Brigsteer and Levens, getting to Bellingham Buttery at Leven Hall just before 4pm.
After my brewstop, it was good hour ride home through Heversham, Holme, Tewitfield and Over Kellet back to
Halton.
