Ride Report by Simeon Orme
Yes thought did a great deal to my plans for the ride when I realize that in correctly, not index rear gears
evening before but after watching a Youtube video again it finally click what I was doing wrong and after
about good hour of messing around I got the gears working again so that the chain would not jump into the
wheel and yes I will hold my hand up and say that not world greatest cycle mechanic.
Anyway it was get late in the morning by time that I set off, I headed out of Halton on the Low Road and
after about mile I turn on cycle path at the Crook O’Lune which I followed up the Lune Valley just after Bull
Beck Bridge where turn on to the A683, hopefully in few years time the cycle path will extended up to
Hornby and beyond to the A65 if Sutrans get its way, I think the big plan is get traffic free cycle route from
Morecambe up to Clapham as part of the Way of the Roses Cycle Route which will not be a bad thing for the
area with Eden Project North coming to Morecambe in near future.
Yes I know for some folk the A683 can be a bit of nightmare to cycle along but changes to the Highway code
motorist are slowly start respect cyclist’s rights on the road but I know that some motorist treat the A683 as
extension of the M6, has they head into the Yorkshire Dales National Park and not realizing that they driving
through the Forest of Bowland Area of outstanding natural beauty which is another National Park but if you
one those cyclist that turns around at end cycle path near Bull Beck Bridge. Its well worth it being brave and
following the A683 through Claughton to the junction with the B6480 and then followed this road into Wray,
then like I did on this ride I stop for a brew and cake at the Bridge House Farm Tearooms.
Yes after my coffee and cake stop, the photographer part of me took over and decide to take my time and see
how many photos of the local wild flowers I could take, the photos of the Crosswort flowering at side of
Russell which I had to use app on my mobile phone to find out what it was and the Yellow Rattle flowering in
the grounds of St Saviour Church in Aughton were to new me and always amaze what I see when the weather
conditions are calm, suitable for wild flower photography.
From Wray, I followed the tarmac up the Hindburn to Mill Houses where I turn on to Russells Lane which
followed to end of the lane, then turn on to the Old Moor Road which followed down to Wennington for late
lunch by River Wenning.
I did have move from picnic table to another bench due to gipsie’s horse eyeing my pack lunch. There several
groups of gipsies camp out on the village greens in Wennington with there colorful horse drawn caravans
heading up to Appleby Horse Fair.
Has it pointed out to me later in the day when I got chatting to gentlemen at St. Wilfrids Church in Melling
we got a lot to thank the gipsies with regards to wild flower conservation where they camp their horses keep
vegetation in check and encourage wild flowers like Orchids to grow. We may not always welcome them in
our back yard but with price of fuel going up one way only for several months maybe we all have to travel
around our countryside in more environmental way.
After finishing my lunch and had chat with the guy who keeping eye on the horse who was moaning about
the amount of traffic using the B6480.
I headed out of Wennington following Lodge Lane over to Melling where stop to take few photos of wild
flowers around the church.
From Melling I followed the A683 down the Lune Valley to near Hornby and then crossed back over the
River Lune via the Loyn Bridge.
I did notice that there was large amount land around Fleet Farm turn over to growing wheat or corn or barley
crop due to that disagreement in Eastern Europe.
I climb out of the lune Valley, following Fleet Lane and then Lea Lane through the hamlet of Eskigge up on
to Aughton Road which I followed into Aughton where stop at St. Saviour Church to take a few photos of
wild flowers in church grounds before heading back to Halton.
