Ride report by Simeon Orme
Well I must be getting fitter, has I made it up the first climb out of Halton with out using my lowest gear my
two feet and you will notice that I am back using FX3 still having a few problems with gears due to the new
wheel which I thought I had sort out but I think it will case of re indexing the gears.
Anyway I soon caught up another cyclist’s who was on short tour and was headed back to his car in Teesdale
via Kirkby Stephen, after brief conversation with him, I stop for coffee and cake at the Saddles Cafe at the Red
Well Country Inn.
After my coffee stop I continue along the B6254 for about mile before turning on to Borwick Road which is
route don’t often use in past and after a bit of climbing through Lord’s Lot Wood where the Bluebells had
finished flowering there was nice freewheel into Keer Valley, then there was a bit clmbing to do has followed
Borwick Road into Borwick.
I headed out of Borwick, on Borwick Lane which I followed into Priest Hutton where the lane changes it name
to Whitebeck Lane which I followed to the A6070. Like my ride to Kendal Castle, I decide to stay on it for next
few miles, has followed it through Burton-in-Kendal and if you by your self you can build up quite a bit of
speed on this road. I was soon turn off it at Moss End and followed Moss End Lane through Wath Sutton and
then crossed over the B6385 in Woodlands and then followed the lane into Deepthwaite where I decide to
folllow Rowell Lane through Rowell, then followed Woodhouse Lane into Heversham.
After crossing over the A6 in Heversham, I followed Moss Side Lane down on to Milnthorpe Marsh and around
to near Leven Hall where I turn on to the A6 which I followed around Levens Hall. I was soon following the
lane pass Low Levens Farm and on to High Sampool where I turn on to tarmac bridleway which followed to
wards Sampool Bridge. After crossing over the A590, I headed through Sampool Bridge and then turn on to
cycle path next to the A590 which followed to the 0ld A590 which stay on for short distance before following
the public byway to Raven’s Lodge where on to bridleway which I followed over to Mill Side. The first part of
the bridleway was case of me pushing the bike up the bridleway through the woods and once I had got to
summit of the climb it was fairly easy track to ride along.
In Mill Side there is bench at end of the bridleway and would recommend using it as stopping point for a lunch
break.
From Mill Side, I followed the lane up to Beck Head where the lane turns into delightful bridleway which
followed back to tarmac where there was a bit climbing to do get up Witherslack Hall Farm. I was a bit late in
the year to enjoy the Spring flowers in Low Park Wood, has followed the lane through the wood pass North
Lodge and down into Winster Valley. The promise rain in morning weather report starting to appear when I got
to High Low Wood which put a stop to me take any more photos of my route down the Winster Valley to
Witherslack. I did stop to have some eat by the church in Witherslack and then rain showers did stop for a bit
when got near Derby Arms where found bench that could sit on and finished rest of my lunch off!
After my very late stop, I followed the old A590 and then the cycle path along side the A590 back to Sampool
Bridge.
I headed out of Sampool Bridge on the Old Road which followed into Levens where there was a bit climbing to
do before I could follow Levens Lane to the A6. I was hoping to get a brew at the cafe at Levens Hall but it full
with Sunday motorists and was not prepare wait around.
So I followed the lanes across Milnthorpe Marsh, then short distance on the B5282, before heading through
Sandside and Storth, again hoping to get brew at Leighton Moss but it was a bit late in the afternoon and the
rain was heavier, I decide to cape up and continue cycling after few wet miles the rain stop again, I took cape
off at the foot/cycle bridge across the River Keer before following the lane into Crag Bank, then after crossing
the A6, I cycle along the towpath of the Lancaster Canal into Bolton-le-Sands.
From Bolton-le-Sands, it was case following Ancliffe Lane and then Bottomdale Road back to Halton and was
very surprise to find it was longest ride that I done so far this year.
