Ride report by Simeon Orme My achievements on this ride were put place my guy on e-bike who was 85 years old, we got chatting at the cross roads in High Casterton after passing each other on the B6254 on way up to Kirkby Lonsdale, yes I will hold my hand up and I had stop to take a few photos when I notice he pass me that was just outside Arkholme and I pass him a bit later on in Newton. He said he bought the e-bike for eighty birthday present and already done 16,000 miles on it and that impress me, I hope when get to his age, I will be able to be doing some of the rides he was doing, he said that he live about same distance from Lancaster has I did and said he started cycling with Carnforth Cycling Club at young age, also knew Ray Moss, who is five years older than this gentleman, who still cycling, he said Ray did map reading for Carnforth Cycling Club. Anyway the ride started with me pedaling the bike out of Halton along Kirkby Lonsdale Road, as we get into the sixth month of the year the time its take me to get to Saddles Cafe at the Red Well is get shorter than at start of the year, yes I could not resist the temptation of that sausage bun and coffee. After the refueling stop, it was fairly easy ride to Kirkby Lonsdale, yes the time its taking me to get there is getting shorter has we had further into 2023. After crossing over the A65, I followed Bridge Brow down to Devil’s Bridge, with temperatures going to be high for the day, there were alot folk enjoying the pleasures of the River Lune but I soon left the honeypot around around Devil’s and following Chapel House Lane into High Casterton. I head out of High Casterton along Well Lane and then Wandales Lane which soon turn into Bents Lane where the climbing actual starts to get you on to Barbondale Road, yes I was quite proud of myself for pedaling all way up Barbondale Road to summit of pass at 990 feet above sea level. Yes I did take ride down into Gawthrop nice and slowly, then lunch break on the village green in Dent before the next stage of the ride up Deep Dale with the warming road sign at start of Deepdale Lane not to go up it when the weather conditions are bad. The summit of the pass over to Kingsdale at 1538 feet above sea level, I rode most of the length of Deepdale Lane before got a little a bit steep for me to ride just after bridge over Gastack Beck, so I did a bit pushing of the bike up the climb, I was pass by four cyclist’s on road bikes but I think its worth the time pushing the bike up Thornton Lane as the views are outstanding looking back down into Deepdale. To underline how dangerous the crossing can be for motorists if the weather conditions are bad there was badly batter motor car on moorland on last part of the climb out of Deepdale, I think it could be feature of the landscape for several years to come, as going very difficult to get off the slope where it stop. I another feature of pass over into Kingsdale is the four gates you have open and close but once you get pass Kingsdale Head you can let your hands off the brake levers and enjoy not pedaling down dale for about good mile before there a bit of climb out valley before I started the freewheel down to Thornton-in- Lonsdale where stop for drink at the Marton Arms Hotel. After the liquid refreshment, I cross back over A65 in Westhouse and followed the lanes down to Burton- in-Lonsdale where there was a bit climbing to do to get out of Greta Valley and into Wenningdale where stop for eat up on village green by River Wenning in Wennington. Then it was usual route that followed back into Lune Valley, has you can see from photos above I did detour through Hermitage Field Community Meadow where spend a bit time taking photo of the wild flowers in meadow before heading back to Halton.
