After the usual climb out of Halton, it was fairly easy ride to Kirkby Lonsdale, mostly down hill or flat but scenery on both side of my route to Kirkby Lonsdale along Kirkby Lonsdale Road then B6254 is outstanding, its some thing I tend to forget be a local of North Lancashire and being spoil by having four National Park on my door step, you tend to forget how beautiful the lower part of Lune Valley is with views looking across to mountains of the Yorkshire Dales in one direction and in the other direction the hills of the Forest of Bowland.
Usually for me, I got to Kirkby Lonsdale just before 10am, my usual watering hole for the morning coffee and cake 'The Crossing Point Café' was still close, so headed out the Market Square and a bit further along the Main Street to Lunesdale Bakery and Tearoom for my morning coffee and cake fix. There plenty space to park bikes in the Tearoom courtyard and being a Bakery their plenty choice in cake which not bad thing on Sunday morning.
You may have notice that I have not made out much on Sunday in June, this down to golfing season starting and being professional greenkeeper which I be doing for over 27 years at same place which sometimes surprises me, I sometimes have work for few hours in morning preparing the golf course for competition and by time you finish doing this around 10am, last thing on your mind is not day out on bike but having a sleep in bed for few hours.
Anyway once I finished my coffee and cake, I headed out of Kirkby Lonsdale still following the B6254 for about a mile into Kearstwick where turn off it, to follow the lanes up the Lune Valley towards Ringmaden Park, having not being out on bike for two Sundays, I notice changes in flora that was out in flower and spend a bit time taking photos, has followed the lane up the Valley. You can understand why the Upper part of the Lune Valley is now in the Yorkshire Dales National Park and again being local you tend to forget the views across the Valley bottom to Fells on opposite side of the valley are breathtaking. I was soon passing through Fleshbeck Wood which delightful Bluebell wood in Spring and on this section of the ride, a low point before the climb up to Ringmaden Park.
After the climb up to Ringmaden Park, I headed through Ringmaden and back down into the valley bottom, to cross over the River Lune via Ringmaden Bridge before joining A683 for short section before following the lanes around to Middleton Hall Bridge where join the A683 for another section through Middleton Head. I was soon back on the quite lanes, heading along Jorden Lane.
After following Jorden Lane down pass Holme Farm, it was start of the climb up Holme Fell, once made it to summit of the climb, I stop for some lunch on bench with some fine views looking across the Rawthey Valley towards Sedbergh and the Howgill Fells.
Once I finish my lunch, it was nice freewheel down into Dentdale which one of the crown jewels of the Yorkshire Dales National Park, its a bit up and down lane as you follow the tarmac up the dale to Gawthrop. In Gawthrop its self, there test most cyclist's the climb up Barbondale Road into Barbondale, as the day was getting warmer and made mistake of not wearing shorts, I decide to walk and push my bike up the climb.
At summit of the climb, I stop chat to some cyclist's on Audax starting and finishing in Preston, I must say they were a lot fitter than me, as met them again few miles from Halton and rode with them for about mile.
The ride down Barbondale can be nice if you don't have head wind against you like I had, the day was warming as there a lot folk sunbathing around the ford across Barbon Beck near Blindbeck Bridge.
I continue to follow the tarmac down Barbondale to Barbon, for afternoon coffee and cake stop at The Churchmouse in Barbon.
After my afternoon café stop, it fairly easy ride back to Kirkby Lonsdale where I cross back over River Lune via Devil's Bridge where the river was full of folk cooling off.
After crossing over the A65, I headed back down the Lune Valley back to Halton with short eat up stop at Arkholme.
