Plant description: Galanthus elwesii ‘Whitalii’ is a distinctive and highly sought-after selection of the giant snowdrop, valued for its elegant foliage and early-season charm. Its broad, glaucous-grey leaves are uniquely marked with creamy-yellow to golden stripes, creating an eye-catching display even before the flowers emerge. Blooming from late winter into early spring, it produces large, nodding white flowers with green markings on the inner segments that contrast beautifully against the variegated foliage.

This compact bulbous perennial reaches around 15–20 cm in height and is ideal for woodland gardens, shaded borders, rockeries, and naturalised plantings beneath deciduous trees. Like other snowdrops, it prefers moist, well-drained soil enriched with organic matter and performs best in partial shade, although it will tolerate full sun while in active growth.

‘Whitalii’ is especially prized by collectors for its unusual foliage variegation, which brings ornamental interest throughout the growing season. Reliable, hardy, and easy to establish, it gradually forms attractive clumps that signal the end of winter and the arrival of spring with exceptional elegance.
