Ride report by Simeon Orme For those of us who work outside, the last week in October is most depressing week of the year, waiting for sun to raise, so when clocks go back hour on last Saturday night of October, we get to reclaim that lost hour of daylight for few weeks before having to start at later time. Cyclists have been celebrating this weekend in many ways, the old Lancashire group of the Rough-Stuff Fellowship had weekend away at the old Youth Hostel at top Dentdale each year for everyone to meet up and enjoy weekend of cycling. It was explain to me that reason they pick this weekend because they hour free that YHA did charge them for! It had been over two months seen I have been out on the bike for ride and I have been doing a lot more walking of late around the Arnside and Silverdale Area of Outstanding Beauty which is far better to explorer on two feet than two wheels. So thought I would make life easy for myself by having short ride to Heysham Village and decide to advert fact on the website, I was not very surprise that I was only person who turn up for start of ride inside the Coffee shop of The Centre @ Halton and can’t complain at price of the mug of coffee at £1.50. I did not hang around to long, has I made my way out of Halton over Halton Station Bridge before turn on to cycle path which I followed towards Lancaster, this section of cycle path is botanical interest and I must admit I stop several times to take photos of the wild flowers still flowering at side of the cycle path. Yes its nice interest along the cycle path into Lancaster and once you cross the Millennium Bridge and then look at the classic view of the George & Dragon Pub across River Lune on St George Quay. The cycle path between Lancaster and Morecambe becomes a bit boring with no interesting features to look at other than housing estates, industrial estates and retail parks but once you pass this boring section of the ride and get on to promenade the views are outstanding looking across Morecambe Bay to Lake District National Park and you can understand why there a lot of camper vans park up at side of the promenade. It was nice smooth ride along the promenade, has I headed towards Heysham with a lot folk out walking and getting some fresh air before forecast rain showers. At end of the promenade there is a bit of climb up to Knowlys Road and then followed Wobborrow Road into Heysham Village. It was not day hanging about in cafes and people watching, so headed down the Main Street into the older part of Heysham Village with detour up St. Patrick’s Chapel to look at the views before following the Main Street and then short climb back up Knowlys Road to start of cycle path along the Promenade. The promise rain showers blow in off the Irish Sea appear has cycle back along the promenade towards Morecambe, so I stop to cape up and continue cycling along promenade, when I got to the Stone Jetty I did hang around for a bit because the rain showers were being blown further inland and look to be a few good photo opportunities which worth waiting for! Again it nice smooth ride along the promenade until get pass Morecambe Golf Club, then the surface nothing to write home about! After crossing over A5105, I followed the cycle path up the climb into Hest Bank, then headed along Rushley Drive to end of it where turn on cycle path along towpath of the Lancaster Canal, which followed back towards Lancaster. I did stop for bite to eat under the Bay Gateway Bridge over the Lancaster Canal. I stay on the towpath until cross back over River Lune via the Lune Aqueduct before following the cycle path back up the Lune Valley to Halton Station where I cross back over the River Lune via Halton Station Bridge. It may surprise you that 95 percent of this ride is off-road and can click here to download 19 mile route.
