Ride report by Simeon Orme I was down for leadership duties due to Norman having cycling accident on the way back from watching the tour which is not difficult task for me as been doing this on cycling club runs for now on 35 years, I serve my apprenticeship in the art of ride leadership when I started club cycling in the 1980 when Lancaster CTC Section reform where the kids of the section were taught leadership skills with out knowing it from masters like Fred Lloyd, Roy Davies, Eric Livermore, Alan Fletcher and my own father Derek Orme in the art of leading a ride. The thing about ride leadership its art, folk will soon tell you if you are good at it or crap at it, by the number folk who keep coming out on your ride with you but basic ideal of leading a ride is to keep the group together, knowing when to stop for brew and then knowing when head back to starting point for the ride. A rule of thumb with regards to heading back to starting point, is when you get about mid afternoon, you need to think about heading back to the start. Anyway getting back to ride, one reasons that the South Lakes Group starts its rides at 10am its gives opportunity for like of me to ride to starting point of the ride and for other members to use the car as tool to get starting point of the ride. I set off from Halton, just after 8 am, following the roads up the Lune Valley and then the roads up Wenningdale to High Bentham where I climb out of Wenning Valley and headed across Newby Moor down to Clapham where I met up with Jeremy, Ian and John. We had to wait several minutes for Reading Room Cafe to open up before we headed in for a brew. After our brew stop, we head out of Clapham on the B6480, then followed the bridleway along side the A65 before following national cycle route 68 through Austwick and pass Wharfe then on Swarth Moor we left national cycle route to head through Helwith Bridge before doing a small section on B6479 which took us first real off-road section of the day, where we climb up Long Lane over the shoulder of Pen-y-ghent and rejoining the tarmac near Dale Head. From Dale Head there was good mile of road work before we headed off on the public byway down to New Bridge in Littondale where stop for some lunch. There were a lot off-road motor bikers about in the dale, as we found out about as we head up Littondale after lunch  through Halton Gill they were holding a rally in the dale. We soon left the tarmac in Foxup and started the climb out of Littondale and over Foxup Moor and stopping a few minutes to look at Hull Pot before heading down to Horton-in-Ribblesdale for a brew at Pen-y-ghent Cafe. After our brew stop, everyone took in behind me to head back down Ribbbledale to Helwith Bridge where we followed morning route back to Clapham. I said my goodbyes in Clapham to rest of the party before riding home via Mewith Lane and Wray back to Halton.
