2nd February 2020 ride to Cockersand Abbey (Page five)
A Common gull on a rock at side of Lancaster Canal near Haverbreaks in Lancaster.
Swans on the Lancaster Canal in Lancaster.
A female Common Merganser (North American name) or if you live in Europe its female Goosander on
the Lancaster Canal near Lansil Golf Club. I spend several minutes watching it fish on the canal and has
you can see I took a number of photos of it.

Ride report by Simeon Orme
It was first try out for my new cycling boots, I had few stops in the first mile, to make a few adjustments to
one of the boots but after that quite comfortable to wear, not very good on wet stone surfaces, has found out
trying to push my bike over canal bridge near the hospital, otherwise its quite good cycle boot for folk like
me who are old fashion and like toe clips.
Has said in e-newsletter which sent out on Thursday evening, I did have any real plans for the ride as the
weather forecast for the day was not brilliant and was going ride down the Lune Valley for brew and cake at
Cafe d’Lune and see how day pan out! Which was about the best decision for the day as the only rain shower
on the ride happen when I was enjoying coffee and cake in the cafe.
It is bit disappointing that we going to lose use of the cycle path between the Bay Gateway Bridge and
Skerton Bridge for one year after 10th February for year, to build flood defends along the banks of the River
Lune, I can understand reasons why the work is being done but for anyone trying to cycle through Lancaster
its going to be a bit of pain and to be honest its going to put me off cycling south of Lancaster. Lancaster City
Council as spend £300, 000 on division along Caton Road and maybe wrong I don’t see many cyclist’s using
this route, it may drive a lot of folk back to using the car to get in and out of Lancaster.
Anyway a lot of cyclist’s making good use of cycle path, has head down the Lune Valley through Lancaster
and then followed the cycle path to Condor Green where stop for a brew.
After my brew stop, I made detour into Condor Green to look at fire damage done to Stork Inn which caught
fire during the week, I was told in Cafe d’Lune that it was going take about two year before it reopens.
So after taking a photo of fire damage, I followed the cycle path into Glasson and then head through Glasson,
stopping on Tithe Barn Hill to take few photos of the view looking across the River Lune to Sunderland.
Then I followed the lanes across Thurnham Moss to Bank Houses where I lock up the bike up, has did want
lift bike over gate and did short walk along the coastal path to look around Cockersand Abbey.
After looking around the Abbey, I followed the lanes back across Thurham Moss and back to Glasson.
From Glasson, I followed the cycle path to Aldcliffe and then followed the towpath of Lancaster Canal
through Lancaster to Lune Aqueduct, where rejoin the cycle path which I followed back to Halton.
