18th March 2007 ride with Southern Softies, four photos from Peter Kenner sojourn with the Home Counties Group around the Marlow on the Thames area.

The March ride had a continental feel to it as eleven members headed south across Marlow’s Thames bridge where the mile post indicates Marly le Roi, France 446 km. We had not covered 1% of this milage before the party down to 21 pedals. Mark with help of other soon fixed it in his inimitable way and we were soon enjoying views down towards the river as we followed Gibraltar Lane.
We were pleased to welcome Peter Kenner down from Lancaster to view the Chiliterns. It was a pity that we did not go west into their beautiful heart as Jim, taking note of previous four weeks deluge, had chosen a more or less mud free circuit south of Marlow. Sparkling sunshine saw the group taking a mixture of lanes and tracks to Cookham Rise where perversely we had to climb stiles to access Sustrain Route 52 and exit it at Furze Platt. An entertaining exchange was had with a couple of fellows rummaging in Applehouse Hill Woods for scant remains of a crashed World War Two bomber. As Pudding hoved into sight a cloud appeared to shower the party with snow. It being Mothering Sunday The Dew Drop was bursting with customers, and the landlord , looking forward to the next lunch shift at 2pm, was less than impressed with our sandwiches. When quizzed by others about the legal status of the route taken thru the agricultural college the leader only smiled a rely. It is certainly mud free! And the small herd of Dexter cattle didn’t seem to mind.
Alec pronounced he had lost sense of direction, no doubt promoted by numerous signs declaring Knowle Hill Circuit pointing in numerous directions. However at behest of the stiff NW breeze the multitudinous daffodils nodded their heads in agreement when Burchett and Littlewick Green, plus Knowle and Bowsey Hills, were mentioned. It was then a flash down the bridle path to Frogmill on the Thameside, past Hurley Priory, and the tunnel at Temple, before tar was ridden all the way back on a sunny afternoon to the Leisure Centre in Marlow for a cuppa, all thoughts of Marly le Roi forgotten.
