4th February 2006 ride around the Crake Valley

Yes I got to the start early again and delighted to see Bob McHardy was waiting with several other members; Bob is one of the club’s elder statesmen and well travel member who visited Outer Mongolia in recent years, so it bit of honour for the group to show Bob around a few tracks that he had not done yet!
After Nick and Eileen had arrived, the ten of us headed out of Cartmel along the lanes to Cark visit the café at Southern Lakeland Nurseries for morning coffee, members should note that the café closed on Sundays through the Winter months and its another our chairman’s famous café.
Talking about our chairman Steve, he got his passport stamped and visa to come up north again. He coming out on the group’s 4th March ride starting from Sedbergh and so Peter will be hiding his stock of chocolate biscuits that weekend has Steve is staying at Peter’s for the weekend.
Anyway getting back to the ride, after our morning coffee or for some members their breakfast, we headed up the B5278 towards Haverwaite, then at Low Wood we followed the Cumbria Cycleway (which off-road section) through to Greenodd and crossing over the River Leven via the footbridge, then we headed through Greenodd, then short distance along the A5092 before turning off in Penny Bridge. Then heading up the Crake Valley via lanes through Spark Bridge, then at the hamlet of Nibthwaite Grange we headed up Bletherbarrow Lane, which turns into white lane after Stocks Farm, we stop for some lunch just after the ford on this track.
After lunch we continue along the track to High Ickenthwaite, and then it was short distance down lane to next track which is another white road which we followed for about half mile before following the bridleway into Oxen Park (this track is well worth doing). We rejoin the tarmac and follow the lanes through Brandrake Head to Coulton, where we followed public byway (another track) through Moss Wood which was last track over the day. We then followed the lanes around the back of Bouth and coming out on The Causeway. We then headed through Causeway End and then up Hill Top before dropping down to Newby Bridge where Bob left us to head back to the youth hostel at Troutbeck. The rest of us cross over the A590 and headed back along the lanes back to Cartmel.
