30th September tour around northern part of Lake Windermere

The nine of us left the Kendal Leisure Centre with Don and I dress in the latest Adli cycling gear, we followed our usually route through Kendal via the cycle track to get on to the A6, after about a mile we turn on to Gillthwaiterigg Road, where we stay on the East Side of the Kent Valley and followed several lanes up to Staveley for our only café stop of the day at Wilf’s.

After about half an hour at Wilf’s cafe, we headed out of Stavely and soon following the cycle track along side the A591 up to Ings. At Ings, we followed the Moorhowe Road over into the Troutbeck Valley, after crossing over the A592, we soon on our first track of the day we followed into Town End and crossing Trout Beck via two foot bridges. After crossing over Bridge Lane in Town End we followed another short bridleway up on to Holbeck Lane, after about 500 yards on the tarmac we join our next track which we follow up on to Robins Lane, after High Skelghyll Farm we stop for some lunch and to enjoy the views of Lake Windermere.

After lunch we continue along the track through Skelghyll Wood and dropping down into Ambleside, after short break for Peter and Brian Parkinson to buy Ice cream, we then made our way through Waterhead, then through Clappersgate and then followed the B5286 for about two miles before we turn off to follow the road up to High Wray, just after Wray Church we turn on our next track, which followed along the shores of Lake Windermere up to The Ferry House, where we cross over the Lake via the ferry. After crossing over the A592 again, we climb up the B5284 where we join the A5074 which we followed towards the village of Winster, after about a mile we turn on to white road which we followed over Undermillbeck Common and dropping down into the Gilpin Valley, we then followed lanes back on to the B5284 through the hamlet of Mitchelland, we then followed the B5284 and A5284 back into Kendal and getting back to the cars for five o’clock.
