1st July 2006 ride to Dentdale and along the Craven Way

Ride report by Simeon Orme
Due to Brian and Peter still having their second breakfast in Aston’s Bakery & Coffee Bar after riding up from Kirkby Lonsdale where they had left their cars, the rest of us were force to join them in having morning coffee early, has I had plan to have morning coffee stop in Dent, there were few complains after cycling past several cafes of not stopping later in morning. Anyway after everyone well fed, we headed out of Sedbergh on the main road into Dentdale, soon after crossing over the River Rawthey, we headed through the hamlet of Millthrop where we nearly lost half party who had followed Peter who had not seen the rest of us make the right turning after rounding up everyone again we followed the bridleway out of Millthrop through Gap Wood and past Gate Manor into Dentdale, where we rejoin the main road which we followed into Dent village.
In Dent we waited for everyone catch up before heading out of the village toward Deepdale, after about good mile we cross over the Deepdale Beck at Mill Bridge and headed up Dyke Hall Lane, after short distance we turn on to the Craven Way, I think only person that rode most of the climb out of the Valley was Brian Parkinson, we all made it to the top where stop for some lunch and look at the view.
After lunch we continue along the track, riding parts and sometime getting off walk other parts. All around us, we were treated to views of Yorkshire Dales at there best, after few miles the track drops into Little Dale where we started to notice that there were a lot of people heading up the path to Whernside and it look like some was holding party on the summit. Any way we continue down Little Dale and followed the track through the hamlet of Winterscales, then under Ribblehead Viaduct where the speed of the ride pick up to be first in line at bar of the Inn at Ribblehead.
After sitting outside the pub for sometime Pat mention was it time to go, when I look at my watch it was getting on four o’clock so we headed up the B6255 which we followed up to Newby Head where we then followed the road over into Dentdale, where enjoy the freewheel down Dentdale, regrouping in Cowgill and had eat up before heading down back the main valley road into Dent, where Peter Kenner was cheeky enough ask when I was going get rest of my bike fix after just replacing by busted front rim in the past week, well you can’t please everyone and he did not even noticed new jersey I was wearing! It had been under my RSF sweatshirt I had been wearing most of the day, which I taken off on the climb up to Newby Head. Has Peter is the New General Secretary of RSF I hope he sets better example to members by coming to the start of the next ride instead of going to nearest cafe and having his second breakfast.
When we got Dent, five of the party decided they would have tea in Dent at one of local pubs, which left me and Bill head back to cars at Sedbergh.
